LMB: What prompted you to start your business?
JL: I wanted to create my own workspace where I could pursue my passion. I have always dreamed of having my own place where I can offer the services I truly enjoy, while having the creative freedom to design my own treatments. The idea of doing things a little out of the box and in my own way really appeals to me.
Giving people the opportunity to improve their skin and enjoy luxurious spa treatments without having to pay an arm and a leg, treatments that genuinely work and leave them feeling like a million bucks every time they walk out the door, is something I strive for and am extremely passionate about.
LMB: When and how did you realise that beauty was your passion?
JL: When I started high school, I began experimenting with makeup and quickly realised how much I enjoyed it. Around the age of 16 or 17, I wanted to improve my own skin and started investing in skincare, which pushed me towards wanting to study makeup.
After high school, my mom and I visited Face to Face Beauty and Makeup Design School. I initially wanted to take the one-year makeup course, but I ended up choosing the three-year course, which covered all aspects of beauty – from facials and massages to nails. During my studies, I discovered that my true passion lay in skincare and body treatments.
LMB: What about the beauty industry attracts you the most?
JL: One of the biggest reasons I love the beauty industry is that it is constantly evolving. There is always something new to learn. New products being launched, treatments improving, and innovative techniques being developed.
There is also rarely just one way to treat a concern. For example, cellulite or acne can be addressed through massages, oils, natural remedies, tailor-made products, or machines. There truly is something for everyone. Using cellulite as an example again, if you’re not a fan of massages, you can opt for lymphatic drainage or dry brushing instead. Treatments can be adapted to suit each individual, helping you become the best version of yourself in a way that you enjoy.
LMB: What services are you planning to offer in your business?
JL: As I am just starting out, I will be keeping things simple and focusing on the basics. These will include:
- Classic full-body massages, as well as back, neck, and shoulder massages
- Personalised facials tailored to each client’s unique skin needs
- Various waxing treatments, such as full leg, bikini, brow, and more
As the business grows, I plan to expand and introduce additional treatments and services.
LMB: Why these specific services?
JL: Let’s start with skincare. As I mentioned earlier, this is one of my biggest passions within the industry. One of the first things I notice about a person is their skin, and I believe many others do too. Everyone wants their skin to look healthy, radiant, and glowing. By treating the skin correctly and catering to individual needs, those results are achievable — and that’s something that truly matters to me.
When it comes to massages, who doesn’t love a full-body massage? It’s an incredibly relaxing experience and leaves anyone feeling amazing afterwards. I enjoy doing massages because I can see how relaxed people become, and how good they feel — which is a reward in itself.
As for waxing, it’s one of the treatments I’m most knowledgeable about and genuinely enjoy performing. What I love most is the long-term benefit: the more consistently you wax, the less hair grows back. It may sound silly, but to me, that’s a huge bonus.
LMB: You chose Rocha Natural Products for your business. Why them specifically?
JL: I love that their products contain mostly natural ingredients, and an added bonus is that they’re affordable.
What really stood out to me is that many of their products include essential oils, which I believe have incredible benefits for both the body and skin. During my time in beauty school, I worked extensively with essential oils and can confidently say that they truly work.I also value the fact that I’m supporting a local business. I feel strongly that more salons and spas should do the same – after all, local is lekker.
LMB: What are you most looking forward to about pursuing this venture?
JL: I’m incredibly grateful to have found something I am truly passionate about. Opening my own salon has always been one of my biggest dreams, and I feel blessed to be able to pursue this opportunity.
Knowledge is something you can never have enough of, and I’m excited about everything I will learn along this journey.
One of my biggest goals in life is to help people improve their skin and body, and having the opportunity to work towards that goal means the world to me. Helping people has always been very important to me.
Overall, I’m extremely excited for this next chapter of my life and all the blessings that will come with it.
