My Experience at Ditch The Box – A Game Changer for Hair Colour

Recently I decided it was time for a hair refresh and had heard great things about a new spot, here in the bay, called Ditch The Box, so I booked myself in to see what it was all about. Honestly? I was completely blown away.

First off, the booking process is incredibly easy. You simply head over to the Fresha app or website, choose your service, and you’re sorted. What I loved most is how customisable everything is. You can add on treatments, select a blow-dry based on your hair length (which already makes the experience feel far more personalised), and even choose a drink to enjoy while your colour sets. Small touches, but they make a huge difference.

I opted for the full colour service, which took roughly 1 hour and 55 minutes, including a blow-dry finish for long hair, with no additional treatment. And yes, I added a cappuccino, which was absolutely delicious.

When I arrived at the salon, I was warmly welcomed by the owner, Christy, who introduced me to my Tint Technician, Asanda Mxakana, and I was seated straight away. I was then given their colour catalogue, which offers a wide selection of shades to choose from. What really stood out to me was that the catalogue uses actual hair samples rather than flat colour swatches. This gives you a much more realistic idea of how the colour will look on your own hair – a thoughtful detail that I think many clients will appreciate.

The salon itself is beautiful. With natural wood elements, black accents, and plants throughout, it has a fresh, modern, and calming feel. The seating is divided into four sections, which not only makes the space look more open but also ensures it never feels crowded.

Asanda did an absolutely incredible job. I’m quite particular when it comes to people touching my hair, but she was both gentle and extremely thorough. We had a lovely chat while she applied the colour, and the owner also stopped by to explain the concept behind Ditch The Box. She shared how wasteful conventional box dye can be. Most people only need an additional 10ml of hair dye along with standard 60ml that comes with a standard box dye. However, most people end up having to buy two boxes of dye, which leads to use of excess and unnecessary dye and a waste of money. It really makes you think.

While waiting for the colour to develop, I enjoyed my yummy cappuccino. It might seem like a small gesture, but it genuinely adds to the experience and makes you as a client feel looked after.

Once it was time to rinse, the service was quick, efficient, and very comfortable. Asanda continuously checked in to make sure the water pressure was just right and that I was relaxed—something that goes a long way.

The blow-dry was just as impressive. Again, gentle, precise, and done with care. These are the details that matter when it comes to hair, and they didn’t miss a beat.

Another standout feature of Ditch The Box is how efficient the entire process is. You arrive, choose your colour, have your service done, pay, and you’re on your way. With how busy life is these days, this kind of streamlined service is a massive win. Being able to get your hair done without losing half your day is something we can all appreciate.

Overall, I am absolutely over the moon with my experience at Ditch The Box. From the personalised services and fair pricing to the friendly team and beautiful space, they’ve really nailed it. If you’re looking to colour your hair, I couldn’t recommend them more. You’ll find them conveniently located on Circular Drive, Springfield.
