In search of a tranquil weekend away, without hesitation, I booked a stay at Zuurberg Mountain Village – 4 Star Luxury Accommodation in Addo, Eastern Cape.
A personal all time favourite getaway within close proximity of Port Elizabeth. Zuurberg Mountain Village is a 160 year old haven of historical delight perfectly nestled high up on the Zuurberg Pass in Addo.
Zuurberg Mountain Village in Addo – exclusivity at its best
They are an exclusive mountain top Hotel, set in 160 hectares of indigenous vegetation with absolutely breath-taking views of the infamous Addo Elephant National Park. A mere one hour’s drive from Port Elizabeth, offering guests time in nature, an abundance of wildlife and tranquillity in the most majestic African setting.
Over the years, this haven has become one of the most special locations to me. Without a doubt, many are able to state that over the years, this mountain village has become an intricate part of many journeys. An establishment that is enjoyed on every visit, on numerous occasions and remains completely timeless as the years pass by.
For this particular stay I booked my partner and I into the Edwardian Village Cottages. These private cottages are set out perfectly, allowing guests to enjoy both the spectacular mountain and valley views. What a treat. Each cottage is elegantly decorated, modern touches meet historian flare. The cottage’s boast a private entrance, double or twin beds, a wardrobe, desk, sitting area, 2 patios on the east and west side, ideal for magical sunrises and sunsets.
A honesty mini-bar, tea and coffee maker. Black-wood floors, a climate control air-con, under-floor heating in the bathroom for the colder months as well as a well thought out freestanding bath which includes an indoor and outdoor showers.
On arrival we were met at reception by Henri Alant, the owner of this truly remarkable establishment, which is always a great pleasure. After check in, we settled in to our home away from home immediately. Upon arrival you can not help but feel completely relaxed.
The weather was definitely on our side and we meandered over to the pool area. We spent most of the afternoon soaking up the sun, taking in the panoramic view and breathing in the fresh mountain air. The pool is situated off The Cycad, the hotel’s main dining area, which allows guests to enjoy a light alfresco menu and ice cold beverages while relaxing pool side.
We ordered a cheese platter for two, not wanting to ruin our appetites for our fine dining experience planned for the evening. The Cycad itself is enhanced by several features – the counter hand-crafted by the 1820 Settlers, fireplaces & French doors leading out onto the patio and pool area. That evening our dining experience consisted of a classic mouth watering 5 course carvery which was beyond delectable.
After a peaceful night sleep, we woke up well rested and ready to face the new day bright eyed and bushy tailed. Perfect weather yet again. After enjoying a leisurely breakfast we opted to spend our time outdoors exploring the mountainous hiking trails and around the sparkling pool.
A time spent I will never get tired of. After last year, this time was even more memorable, purely to shut off from the outside world for a little while and focus on our general well being. I am a firm believer that nature heals our bodies.
Did you know that only 30 minutes per week spent close to nature decreases risk of high blood pressure by 9%? Spending time outside reduces stress, boosts your immune system and increases your energy levels. Nothing will improve your health so comprehensively as hiking, swimming or just going for a stroll.
Zuurberg Mountain Village offers a variety of leisure facilities and activities which include, my favourite, the swimming pool, tennis courts, a kiddie’s playground area, pool table, Addo National Park game drives, scenic hiking trails, bird watching and horse trails. Our second night, after dinner, we enjoyed a quiet beverage on the verandah with a handful of other guests.
The evening sky was pure perfection and could not be wasted. While we all sat amongst each other sharing stories I felt completely at peace and content in that moment. The tranquillity we went in search for, we found. Zuurberg Mountain Village is a stay to remember. We can not wait to visit this mountain haven yet again.
