The 19th Annual South African National Parks (SAnParks) week has drawn to a close, and despite the inconsistent weather, hundreds of Gqeberha residents, and even international tourists crossed the threshold to raw nature from the 9th to the 13th of September 2024.
Since its inception in 2006, the National Parks week has hosted thousands of day visitors nationwide. Addo Elephant Park is no exception to this. Located an hour and a few minutes from the Windy City, the Park saw a variety of visitors, from young to old, local to international, and scholars to working class.
Upon entering the park, you are equipped with a permit and map to assist you with your journey throughout the wild. Whilst driving, you can encounter many different types of land animals – from hyenas, to buffalo, and if your eyes can match speed and quick hooves, perhaps an eland or kudu.
Aside from its namesake, Addo Elephant Park is home to not only the Big 5, but the Big 7 – which means, yes, you can encounter a lion here and there, but the rules are quite clear, in order to stay safe, you need to remain seated in the vehicle at all times, apart from well-marked destinations like picnic areas and lookouts, where you are able to step out, use the restroom and enjoy a snack.
The Park is an international landmark, but home to most Gqeberhans. The drive is beautiful, engulfed in greenery, littered with waterholes for the animals, and most importantly, populated by the different animals. When driving, you may spot a four-legged creature grazing quietly, or even just resting, but if you’re lucky, you’ll find yourself giving way to the massive tuskers who traverse the land at their own leisure.
True to its namesake, the Park is populated by elephants and home to others. This is a perfect destination for a day trip for the family, or a school trip game drive, or a team-building event, and even a romantic getaway. Equipped with different living and camp facilities, Addo is the perfect place to spend with your special someone, or your corporate someone’s.
So if you’re looking for a game drive, a getaway, or a family day, don’t hesitate to look up booking online. In the meantime, keep your eyes peeled for next year’s South African National Parks week!
